SPRING HAS SPRUNG: TIPS FOR PREPARING YOUR HOME AND GARDEN

The winter months are behind us as we step into spring and look forward to the bank holiday weekend. With the days getting longer and the weather warming up, it’s time to prepare our homes and gardens for the hot weather ahead.
Home safe and sound
  • Ensure all window locks work properly. With windows generally shut for the winter months, it’s vital to double-check window locks to avoid possible break-ins. It’s also important, when windows are open, to keep valuable items such as purses or wallets out of sight to avoid any snooping burglars
  • Clearing out and cleaning washer and dryer ducts annual is not just a matter of cleanliness, this simple DIY task can also avoid any potential fires
  • After working hard during the winter months, it’s imperative to check the boiler for possible build-up of soot, scale and debris that could slow down the boiler’s efficiency resulting in more energy use
  • The flowers aren’t the only thing coming out of the ground in spring. The warmer weather brings pests like ants and beetles along with flies and mosquitos looking for a way into homes. It’s important that windows and screen doors are sealed properly to avoid any unwelcome guests
Let’s step outside
  • The UK is notoriously rainy during this time of year, so it’s important to check gutters to ensure they’re clear of debris like dead leaves so that rainwater can flow freely and prevent potential leaks or flooding
  • Whilst checking gutters, also check the roofline looks clean and clear. Holes or shifted tiles on the roof could cause leakage into the home when it rains
  • As we spend more time outdoors, it’s necessary to keep your pavement, patio and decking clear of moss. Moss can become slippery when wet so to avoid injuries it’s important to keep pathways clean and devoid of moss and algae

It’s easy for us all to become distracted by the sunshine and blooming flowers as the winter months slip away but it’s good to stay focused on keeping our homes and gardens maintained and safe so that spring and summer can be enjoyed worry-free.
