SPOTLIGHT ON… AFFINITY GROUP LEGAL EXPENSES INSURANCE

At Arc Legal, we’re proud of the partnerships we’ve developed with various affinity groups around the UK. One of the oldest of these is with the Police Federation, a partnership which goes back nearly 20 years. In that time, we’ve provided expert cover for occupational and non-occupational regulatory and litigation risks for 38 of the 43 police federations across the country.

What is an affinity?

An affinity is a specific collective group that belongs to a particular union or membership organisation that shares common interests or goals. As well as the Police Federation, we also work with groups such as PACEY, the Professional Association for Childcare and Early Years.

We recognise that each affinity group has specific legal needs, so it’s important they can access bespoke support, delivered by experts who understand their requirements.

We individually tailor cover for each affinity group following analysis and review of their customer base and the legal issues they may face. Our policies are designed to meet members’ specific needs and characteristics using our benchmarking guide based on real-world claims frequency and average claims values.

The ability to offer a tailored product to affinity members can be a valuable benefit and includes a 365-day 24/7 Legal Assistance Helpline for help and advice on a wide range of legal issues and access to our wide range of ancillary insurance products and services including Home Emergency and Motor Breakdown and dedicated legal helplines.

The Police Federation

Our long-running Police Federation scheme gives Federation members, retired officers, and their families on and off-duty protection via Legal Expenses Insurance (LEI) and a range of assistance services including Legal Assistance and Tax Helplines, a Lifestyle Counselling Helpline, and an online support service as well as access to a library of useful legal documents.

We currently support over 135,000 officers, giving them the confidence that if they need legal assistance, our expertly tailored LEI product is available to them, providing cover for legal fees and a 24/7 Legal Assistance Helpline. Cover is also provided to the British Transport Police, Special Constabulary, Guernsey Police, Royal Gibraltar Police and Gibraltar Defence Force. This scheme has more than demonstrated its worth in recent years; we’ve observed an increase in claims and disciplinary action where LEI can provide cover for:

• Representation in an initial interview
• Representation at Public Enquiries and Inquests
• Employment disputes

The cost of procuring defence can be significant, so LEI gives hard-working officers extra security and peace of mind that they will be supported in pursuing a defence. Of course, normal parameters apply, as with all LEI products, claims will only be accepted if there are good prospects of success, and they meet the policy conditions.
